What to Do When Your Site Drops

It is quite normal that after having worked on a website ranking for months one day while checking its ranking you find shocking results. ‘The site’s ranking has drastically dropped.’  It happens and for one who is in the SEO business, it sometimes happens but happens suddenly. Nevertheless, there is no point in panicking. When a site drops, there are surely ways to reinstate it in its original or in a better position.

In such a situation, when you find that the site’s position has dropped, relax and believe in one rule- It is the same site that you have put to a better ranking some day and you can again pull it up. However, for the clients, a site drop situation is difficult to swallow and they may react quite weirdly.

The best way to fight a site drop situation is to sit back, think and restart the SEO process all over again following the below mentioned five steps. Following these five steps, you can easily restore ranking of the site.

1 – Build Links

Do something proactive, build links afresh when you notice a drop in the site’s ranking or position. Believe that you had secured a place for the site and now it is time again to reinstate it. Build relevant and solid links- is one thing that can do wonders.

2 – Stop, think before you edit your site.

Take a break before you start editing the site. Minor changes to the content may not bring in drastic improvement in the ranking. Do not think of putting in more target phrases in the content as repeating keywords may do harm than any good to the site. Stop before you step out to edit your site. Instead, go for some solid steps such as link building.

3 & 4 – Analyze the Sites that have out ranked your site.

Closely observe what other sites did to and jumped to higher ranking than your site. Look at the sites and find out what strategy they could have opted to out-rank your site. Get hold of the tactics, apply it more rigorously, and use them to out rank them this time. However, remember onsite optimization and the back links are the two key areas you must focus.

5 – Take Action

After having done the tedious task of link building, gather data, draw inferences and decide further strategy. For example, suppose a website that has superseded yours in ranking has very low word count and loads of footer links. Query yourself. Is this strategy of that this site really worked? Alternatively, it is another thing that is working miracles for it. Figure out what has really worked for those sites and based on the information decide further strategy for your site. Finalize the strategy and put it into action.
